Complaining is a lot easier than being happy with what you have. Yet grateful you are much more.
Your happiness is going up like a spear. With these five tips, you feel more grateful without much effort.
1. SAY ‘THANK YOU’ MORE OFTEN
It may sound crazy to say ‘thank you’ for things that seem very ordinary. Like the train that runs on time, your partner who takes the garbage away or a good night’s sleep. Still, it starts to be more grateful with a greater eye for these ordinary things. That does not mean that you have to say ‘thank you’ aloud. Standing still for a second is enough.
2. CHOOSE A FIXED MOMENT TO BE GRATEFUL
Many people like to make a gratitude list in the evening before going to bed. They will thus sleep with a satisfied feeling. To avoid forgetting it, it’s smart to stick this new habit behind something you do every night. Such as brushing your teeth, reading a book or cleaning up the kitchen. At a certain moment, you do not have to think about it anymore and it is a habit to make such a list every day.
3. EXPECT LESS
Everyone has expectations. If you have a job, you expect your salary to be paid on a certain date. And if you live together, you might expect your partner to help keep your house tidy. Expectations sometimes only make it difficult to be grateful for small things. Therefore, try to fill in less in advance how something should look like and take life more as it comes. This makes you more grateful for everything that comes your way.
4. CREATE A GRATITUDE SPOT
It works very simply: you look for a pot, vase or can, write on paper that you are grateful for and put it into it. Put the pot in a place where you look at it every day. So you remind yourself every day that there is enough to be grateful for. You also forget that you are less likely to fill the pot daily with a new note. See every month, week or year what’s in your gratitude spot. It guarantees your mood guaranteed.
5. DO IT TOGETHER
On some days it is difficult to imagine what you are grateful for. It then helps to have it together with a friend, colleague or partner about what makes this day beautiful. For example, speak to a friend to append daily for which you are grateful. Or hang on your work a sheet of paper where you can write to colleagues that they are happy with. By doing it together, being grateful becomes much easier.
